Eden Hall Fosters Love of Reading Through Battle of the Books

Eden Hall’s bookworms united over three nights in late February and early March as they engaged in Battle of the Books, an annual competition designed to encourage reading and to give recognition to those who enjoy reading.

Led by co-directors Mrs. Elizabeth Shenefiel and Mrs. Christina Strine, Battle of the Books kicked off in early December when students attended kick-off meetings, formed grade-level teams of 3-5 participants and selected a team manager. Students were then tasked with spending the next several weeks reading from a list of 8-10 books (see below) selected by the Battle of the Books Committee in preparation for battle night.

In advance of the battle, students were required to create a team poster to display on battle night. Students were also encouraged to plan team outfits. Northern Tier Regional Library hosted two events for students to create screen-printed t-shirts, make team buttons and work on their team posters.

On battle night, students were prepared to answer trivia questions about each book. Students also were required to memorize each author’s name with correct spelling. Battle night included three rounds of questions with one question per book per round. At the conclusion of each grade’s battle night, the top three teams were revealed, with the top team winning the much-coveted BOB Duck.

“Battle of the Books has become an event that students in all three grade levels look forward to every year,” said Mrs. Strine. “The enjoyment and excitement we see from all the participants as they read great literature and work together as a team shows the value of this program.”

Congratulations to our top three teams in each grade!
